Protecting your wishes

Make sure your wishes are paid for.

Final expense coverage pays a set amount to someone you trust. They use it to carry out your plan as you wrote it, so no bill is left for your family.

Three steps, all online.

  1. 1

    See the cost

Your plan shows what it would cost where you live. Only when you ask, or at the end of your plan.

  2. 2

    Choose an amount

We suggest an amount sized to your own plan, with a little extra for rising prices. You can choose more or less.

  3. 3

    Apply with Ethos

A short online application with a few health questions. Your plan's amount is already filled in.

From your plan to the day it's needed.

The coverage and the plan travel together, so the person you trust has both.

  1. Your plan

Your wishes, written down in your own words.

  2. Your coverage

A set amount through Ethos, paid when it's needed.

  3. Someone you trust

The person you name receives the money, and your plan.

  4. Any funeral home

They choose who carries it out, wherever that may be. Or you can assign it to one ahead of time.

What it is, plainly.

No fine print. Here is how final expense coverage works.

Who it pays

The person you name, your beneficiary. Once your policy is issued, you can also assign it to a funeral home, so they're paid directly.

What it pays for

Whatever your plan needs: the funeral home, the cemetery, flowers, travel for family.

Is the price locked?

The coverage amount is fixed. Funeral prices tend to rise, which is why we suggest a little extra.

If you move

Your coverage goes with you, and any funeral home, anywhere, can carry out your plan.

Waiting periods

Some policies pay the full amount only after the first [two] years. You'll see this plainly before you apply. [TO CONFIRM]

Who can apply

Ages [XX] to [XX], for coverage from [$X,XXX] to [$XX,XXX], in [XX] states. [TO CONFIRM]

We also write a short letter to your beneficiary from your plan, so they know what the coverage is for.

An example.

Example figures

Ruth, 72, near Chicago

A simple cremation, then family and friends in her backyard, with music from the records she loved.

Typical cost near her
$4,550
Suggested coverage
$6,000
Paid to
Anna, her daughter

The extra allows for rising prices. Anna also receives Ruth's plan, and a short letter that says what the money is for.

Questions people ask.

What if I already have life insurance?

Tell the planner what you have. It's taken off the estimate, so you only protect what's missing.

Can my family use a different funeral home?

Yes. The coverage pays the person you name, so your family can choose any funeral home, anywhere. If you've assigned it to a funeral home, the assignment can be changed. [CONFIRM WITH ETHOS]

Can the coverage pay a funeral home directly?

Yes. Your policy is payable to the person you name, and once it's issued, you can assign it to a funeral home of your choice.

Do I have to protect my plan to keep it?

No. Your plan is free to make and keep, whether you protect it or not.

What if I change my mind after I apply?

Policies have a free-look period, when you can cancel for a full refund. You'll see the exact number of days before you apply. [TO CONFIRM]
