What the person in charge sees

Anna, you're in charge of Ruth's plan.

Ruth wrote down her wishes so you wouldn't have to guess. Take it one step at a time. Nothing here has to happen all at once.

If Ruth has just died, the first call

  • At home, with hospice: call the hospice nurse.
  • At home, unexpectedly: call 911.
  • In a hospital or care home: the staff will guide you.

What can wait

  • The date of the service
  • The obituary
  • Where the ashes rest in the long run
  • Thank-you notes

Nothing has to be decided tonight.

    Read Ruth's wishes

Everything she decided, in her own words.

  2. 2

    Choose a funeral home

Any funeral home can carry out Ruth's plan. Tell us which one you choose, and we'll send them her plan.

You can change funeral homes later. Ruth's plan goes wherever you go.

  3. 3

    Start the claim

Ruth protected her plan with $6,000 of coverage through Ethos, and named you as the beneficiary. Start the claim here, and it pays you, for the funeral home you choose. If Ruth had assigned it to a funeral home, it would pay them directly.

You'll need a certified copy of the death certificate. The funeral home can usually order copies for you.

    Let family know

Ruth chose two more people to receive her plan when it's needed: Ben, her grandson, and Grace, her neighbor. Send it when you're ready.
